Detroit Launches 8 Neighborhood COVID Vaccine Stations as Cases Arise in the City

DETROIT – The city of Detroit is opening eight COVID-19 vaccination sites in the neighborhood, in addition to an expansion at the TCF Center, to combat the increase in cases and hospitalizations in the city.

Detroit’s vaccination rate, 21% on Monday, is far below neighboring areas and the state’s overall average, which is 35%. The city is expanding options for residents with an urgent message: Get vaccinated.

Next week, the city will be offering eight additional locations throughout the week, in addition to its community Saturdays and other evangelistic programs, to provide Detroit residents with the opportunity to be vaccinated in a convenient, family-friendly location close to home.

As of Monday, April 12 through Friday, April 16, there will be 1-2 locations operating each day and each municipal district will have at least one vaccination event. The goal of the effort is to reach more Detroit residents, who are still behind other areas in the region and the state in terms of vaccination rates, in their own neighborhoods. The sites will be operated in partnership with the Detroit Public Schools Community District and the Detroit Islamic Center. The Johnson & Johnson single dose vaccine will be offered.

“In addition to the excellent work being done at the TCF Center in recent months, teams from our Health Department visited 175 community sites and administered more than 45,000 doses. Today, we are further intensifying our vaccination efforts in the neighborhoods, ”said Denise Fair, director of public health. “We are deeply grateful to our partners in the Detroit Public Schools Community District and the Detroit Islamic Center for providing us with these places where Detroit residents can go to get vaccinated in their own neighborhood.”

TCF Walk Up commitments start today

Also as of today, the first direct consultations at the TCF are taking place. Last week, Mayor Mike Duggan announced that the city’s TCF operation would increase the capacity from 5,000 doses a day to 8,000 a day, offering immediate care within the center.

Residents now have the option of going to the drive up or walk up location when they call 313-230-0505 to make an appointment. If the caller prefers the unit, they will be scheduled to do so, although it may take a little longer to get an appointment than it would take for the internal option.

“We want to offer the experience that makes each person more comfortable,” said Mayor Duggan. “If you choose to increase your first dose, this is where you go for your second dose. The same applies if you choose the indoor location. “

Starting on Monday, individuals who select the internal option will begin receiving their first dose at the TCF Center. Here are the instructions for who will choose the internal option:

• Parking in the rooftop garage, exiting Congress west of Washington on Congress Street. The gate will be open and there is no need for payment or parking validation.

• Follow the signs to the internal vaccination site. Stairs and elevators are available.

• Check in. After checking in, enter the ballroom and fill out your consent form.

• Take your picture! After receiving the vaccination, you will remain for an observation period of 15 minutes before leaving.

All vaccinations must be scheduled first by calling 313-230-0505. As of today, there are now only two categories of eligibility for Detroit residents to schedule a vaccination:

• Any Detroiter aged 16 or over

• Any worker working on a construction site in the city of Detroit
