Detroit expands COVID vaccine eligibility to all local workers who live or work in the city

The city of Detroit has increased eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine to include anyone who lives or works in the city and has to report to work.

Previously, only certain categories of workers reporting to a workplace, such as teachers, postal workers, food handlers and manufacturing workers, were eligible. Eligibility has now been extended to all local employees, as long as they live or work in the city, such as bank branch employees and other executive employees.

Mayor Mike Duggan said any large employer capable of aligning at least 100 employees in advance can ask the Detroit Department of Health to carry out vaccines on the spot, instead of having to travel to the TCF. Employers able to gather large groups of more than 100 employees over the course of a day can call the Detroit Means Business call center at (844) 333-8249 to schedule a visit to the Department of Health.

All other on-site workers now eligible should schedule their appointment by calling the central vaccine scheduling number in the city at 313-230-0505.

For greater efficiency and convenience, the city recommends that, when possible, eligible members of the same family or neighbors book together and arrive in the same vehicle. Essential Group B workers are required to provide their employer’s name and their most recent paycheck to verify their eligibility.

Second vaccination required

When they schedule their appointment, individuals who receive Pfizer or Moderna will be provided TWO consultation dates, one for the first dose and one for the second required dose. The call center team will contact each scheduled person before their second appointment to remind them. Individuals will also receive specific instructions on when and where to arrive at the TCF Center, where they must complete a basic consent form.
