New York police say they arrested the driver who allegedly assaulted and killed Robert Maraj, father of rapper Nicki Minaj, last week on Long Island.
Det. Nassau County Police Lieutenant Stephen Fitzpatrick said on Wednesday that Charles Polevich, 70, was arrested after surrendering.
Polevich faces charges for leaving the scene of a deadly car accident and for taking steps to hide or disguise his distinguished 1992 white Volvo station wagon from the authorities, Fitzpatrick said, adding that the police tracked him before and after the accident using safety imagery.
“We kind of crawled straight to his house,” said Fitzpatrick.
Polevich owns a home in Mineola, New York, on Long Island, but lives in Guam, the U.S. territory in the western Pacific, said Fitzpatrick.
Representatives for Nicki Minaj did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News.
Polevich did not immediately respond to an email from NBC News requesting comments.
The collision occurred around 6:15 pm ET on Friday, while snow covered the streets of Mineola.
Maraj, 64, was walking on the road when he was hit by Polevich, who was traveling in the same direction, said Fitzpatrick.
“Mr. Povelich stopped at that moment, but he ran away after he saw that he had injured that person,” said Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick added that Polevich probably would not have faced charges if he had not fled the scene.
According to public records, Polevich is the president of Allied Pacific Environmental Consulting, Inc. in Guam.
