Bungie officially revealed the 13th season of Destiny 2 today and adds new attacks, armor sets and a combined activity called Battlegrounds. Season of the Chosen also revisits where Destiny 2 started by bringing Cabal’s empress, Caiatl, as her main villain.

This is the first time that players have actually been able to see Caiatl, daughter of Calus, former emperor of Cabal and Destiny 2head of the original attack, rather than just reading about it in off-screen lore dumps. Season of the Chosen begins with the new empress suggesting an alliance with the Vanguard to fight the growing threat from the mysterious black pyramids and the hive god Xivu Arath. The negotiations apparently fail, however, forcing Zavala and co. in another confrontation with Destiny’s breed of grown Goombas.

Here is the trailer:

In terms of content, the 13th season adds the following:

  • The Devil’s Lair and Fallen SABER Strikes by Destination 1
  • A new strike called Proving Grounds that takes place in the Last City and is unlocked later in the season.
  • A set of seasonal armor called Praefectus
  • An exotic bow called Ticuu Divination
  • A combined activity for three players called Battlegrounds
  • The return of the Guardian Games event
  • A new preparation area that looks like a center for activities Called the RUDDER

This in addition to some things that Bungie revealed earlier, like renewed looting on the Moon and the City of Dreams, new ritual weapons from each of the Tower’s three main suppliers and the return of umbilical engrams and the prismatic reformulator. Osiris loot tests is also being reviewed. If that means that the “more than 25 exotic, legendary and ritual weapons” promised by Bungie in season 13 will seem like enough to see.

Destiny 2 is feeling a little bit under pressure at the moment, as its sunset mechanics make older equipment obsolete faster than new items can be added. It doesn’t help that much of season 13, at least initially, appears to have been built on the old content from the previous game and previous seasons. Combine the questions around that with the news that some of the players’ favorite weapons I’ll be getting nerfed and I’m very skeptical about the direction of the game next season.

Hopefully, this proves that I am wrong. Season of the Chosen airs next week on February 9 and runs until May 11.
