Despite coronavirus guidance, Ontario finance minister Rod Phillips went abroad on a ‘personal journey’

It appears that the United States is not the only country with politicians who do not practice what they preach during the pandemic.

In Canada, on Tuesday, Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford ordered his finance minister, Rod Phillips, to return “immediately” to the country after finding out that he had left Canada earlier this month for a vacation.

Phillips and his wife left Canada on December 13 and are still abroad, according to their spokeswoman, Emily Hogeveen. Its location has not been revealed.

Ford said Phillips’ decision to travel is “completely unacceptable” – as the Ontario government last month issued guidelines asking residents to stay home to contain the spread.

“I let the minister know that his decision to travel is completely unacceptable and that it will not be tolerated again – by him or any member of our cabinet and caucus,” Ford said in a statement.

Phillips’ official Twitter profile is filled with tweets highlighting the seriousness of the pandemic. In a Christmas Eve tweet, Phillips paid tribute to the frontline workers who make sacrifices during the holiday season.

Phillips’ spokesman told the Toronto Star that several photos of Phillips visiting small public companies and fundraising were taken before his personal trip and tweeted while he was still abroad.
