Design the technical team if Texans hire Eric Bieniemy from the Chiefs

One of the Houston Texans ‘training targets is the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy.

If Bieniemy is the coach of the Texans, he will have to look at his previous coach stops as he will not be able to steal many coaches from the current Kansas City team. Do you think Bieniemy can bring Mike Kafka or Greg Lewis with him? Forget it. In addition, the Texans appear to be intent on keeping Tim Kelly as an offensive coordinator.

Here is a projection of what Bieniemy’s Texas team might look like if he got the job.

Welcome to the fourth full-time coach in the team’s history and Andy Reid’s third consecutive offensive coordinator to land the coach job.

Offensive Coordinator: Tim Kelly

The Texans blocked requests for interviews from other teams for the same job. It would be terrible if Houston did that and was not hired as an offensive coordinator.

Coach QB: Rip Scherer

Scherer was the coach of defenders in Colorado from 2011-12, when Bieniemhy was the offensive coordinator. Scherer was also the coach of defenders of the 2009-10 Carolina Panthers.

RB coach: Brock Olivo

Olivo was a former running back in his five seasons in the NFL (1998-2002) and was a running back trainer for UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks (2011) and Coastal Carolina (2012-13). Olivo was with the 2014-16 Kansas City Chiefs as an assistant coordinator for special teams.

D’Orazio was the 2013-15 Kansas City Chiefs’ “senior head coach”, and was the assistant coach for the 2016-17 Philadelphia Eagles recipients under Doug Pederson. D’Orazio is currently Columbia’s running back coach.

Matthaei has been with the Chiefs since 2013 and is an assistant coach on the offensive line. He can get a promotion by joining the Texans.

Asst. Running game coach / coordinator OL: Eugene Chung

Chung was assistant coach of the 2013-15 Chiefs’ offensive line. From 2016 to 19, he had the same job at the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as being a tight end coach and coordinating racing games.

Pederson said he is inclined to take a year off as a coach, and the role of a consultant is the best of both worlds. Before winning the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017, Pederson was the offensive coordinator for the 2013-15 Chiefs, while Bieniemy was the running back coach.

Defensive coordinator: Brendan Daly

Daly worked with Bieniemy with the 2006-08 Vikings as an assistant defensive line coach and has been the Chiefs’ defensive line coach and racing game coordinator since 2019. Daly can get the promotion by joining Houston. Nick Caserio would also be in favor of this change, as he worked with Daly when he was with the New England Patriots in the same position from 2014-18.

DL coach: Chris Wilson

Bieniemy and Wilson worked together in Colorado from 2001-02, when Bieniemy trained running backs and Wilson trained the defensive line. Why not catch the guy who was the defensive line coach at the Philadelphia Eagles, winner of the Super Bowl, in 2017? Wilson is back in Colorado as the defensive line coach.

LB coach: Fred Pagac

Pagac was with the 2006-13 Vikings and trained linebackers and was the defensive coordinator.

DB coach: Terry Bradden

Bradden has worked with the Chiefs as a defensive quality control coach since 2017 and specializes in defenders.

DB Consultant: Emmitt Thomas

Thomas was the Chiefs’ defense coach from 2010 to 18, and is from Angleton, Texas. Having a Hall of Fame member helping Bradden would be a great way to revitalize Houston’s high school.

Asst. special team coordinator: Kevin O’Dea

O’Dea was the Chiefs’ assistant coordinator of special teams in 2013. He has been out of football since 2018, when he was the assistant coordinator of special teams for the New Orleans Saints.
