After news that the disgruntled Eagles quarterback, Carson Wentz, will be negotiated with the Colts, Texas quarterback’s personal coach Deshaun Watson asked a question on Twitter.
“What are the criteria for a quarterback asking to be traded, then really being traded? ”Quincy Avery posted. “Asking for a friend.”
In fact it is. Watson, like Wentz, wants a fresh start. Wentz is buying one. Watson, so far, is not.
The situations are different, however. Wentz had a terrible year 2020 and the Eagles faced more than $ 40 million in guarantees over the next two years. The Eagles also have Jalen Hurts, who appears to be ready to take over.
Watson, by contrast, played as one of the best defenders in football last year, although the rest of the team did not. He is in the early years of a long term extension and a lot of money. The ceiling and cash charges, especially in 2021, are more than manageable. Watson earns just $ 10.54 million from the base salary this year, and his cap will be just $ 15.94 million. (That changes in a year, when Watson has a fully guaranteed salary of $ 35 million.)
There is another difference. The Eagles seem to understand how to come up with a plan that promotes their best general interests. Texans don’t. Frankly, Texans seem determined to draw a line in the sand simply because they can. This will definitely not bring you the best possible return when Deshaun inevitably gets what he wants.
