Deshaun Watson: NFL star now faces seven lawsuits for alleged sexual assault

The additional claims come from four women who say he contacted them for services such as massage therapy.

This brings the total number of lawsuits against the Pro Bowl quarterback to seven. They were filed in Harris County, Texas, this week by attorney Tony Buzbee, who is representing the seven women.

Watson’s lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said on Friday after the six subsequent lawsuits were filed that he is extremely proud to represent Watson and “to stand completely behind him against what we believe are allegations without merit”.

“However, we will wait to comment in detail until we have completed our review of Mr. Buzbee’s numerous evolving claims,” said Hardin. “We will respond next week and ask you to keep an open mind until we do.”

Watson’s agent, David Mulugheta, posted a tweet on Friday saying, “Sexual assault is real. Victims must be heard and offenders prosecuted.” Mulugheta then warned of the existence of false claims, a phenomenon that studies show to be very rare.

The last four lawsuits claim that Watson “assaulted and harassed” women. The four new lawsuits, opened on Thursday, accuse Watson of assault and harassment, while two say he tried to kiss them.

One of the lawsuits alleges that Watson has sexually abused the claimant on several occasions.

CNN contacted the Houston Police Department and asked if the agency is investigating the allegations, but received a “no comment”.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office told CNN on Thursday that it had not opened an investigation into Watson, according to senior deputy Thomas M. Gilliland.

During a press conference, Buzbee said he was formally contacted by the Houston Police Department. “It is our intention for customers who wish to do so, assemble a package and submit it to the Houston Police Department with the information we have,” said Buzbee.

The Houston Texans released a statement on Thursday that said the NFL “informed us today that they will conduct an investigation into the allegations made in the civil suits filed against Deshaun Watson.”

“We continue to take this and all matters that involve anyone within the Houston Texans organization seriously,” the statement said. “We do not expect to make any additional statements until the NFL investigation is complete.”

When asked if the league had opened an investigation, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said: “The matter is under review of the personal conduct policy.”

Watson played four seasons in Houston and was selected for three Pro Bowls. According to the Spotrac website, he signed a $ 156 million four-year contract in 2020.

CNN’s Steve Almasy, David Close, Jill Martin and Wayne Sterling contributed to this report.
