Deshaun Watson negotiation: Jay Cutler gives Texans QB advice on how to get business

Jay Cutler joined a live broadcast of ESPN 1000 on Twitch on Sunday, and he has some advice for Deshaun Watson. If Watson really wants to leave Houston, but Texas general manager Nick Caserio is reluctant to change him, follow Cutler’s example in 2009.

“Just do what I did, just don’t show up again,” said Cutler on ESPN 1000’s Twitch channel. “They’ll find out.”

Although Cutler did not consider comparing Watson’s exchange request to his own, he admitted that they are similar. The only difference is that he believes that players have even more power now than when he played.

“I didn’t really follow much or pay much attention to him,” said Cutler. “I think the players now have a lot of control over where they want to go. I think your voice is heard a lot more. This is the day and the era in which we live. “

Cutler demanded an exchange outside the Broncos after coach Mike Shanahan was fired, so a promise that most of Shanahan’s offensive team would stay has been broken, according to reports at the time. In Watson’s case, reports say he felt betrayed after owner Cal McNair told Watson that he would be involved in hiring his next GM, only to have the team hire Caserio without consulting him first.

Caserio said the Texans have no interest in negotiating with Watson and will work to repair the broken relationship with his star QB. But, according to Cutler, it may not matter.

“If he wants to leave, he will leave in some way or in some way.”
