Florida’s experience with the coronavirus pandemic confirmed that “the blocking approach is a failed approach,” Republican Governor Ron DeSantis told “The Ingraham Angle” on Thursday.

The governor recently met with the authors of the Great Barrington Declaration, a small consortium of epidemiologists who prescribed a “focused protection” strategy to fight the virus, which often contradicts the decrees of Democratic governors and some federal health officials.
“These are some of the world’s greatest experts [that have] was able to validate that the Florida approach was the right approach, “explained the governor.

DeSantis added that his government oversaw the vaccination of 70% of the state’s elderly population, far more than many other states per capita.
“In Florida, we follow a protection strategy focused on the elderly and vulnerable people, with the economy open, with schools open,” said DeSantis. “The result is that our unemployment is significantly less than the national average. Our COVID mortality per capita is less than the national average.”
In that regard, Ingraham noted that even local critics of DeSantis were complementary in their treatment of the outbreak.
In a recent interview, Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez criticized Tallahassee for preventing local authorities from enforcing mask mandates with fines and other punishments.
However, Suarez added: “I have to praise [DeSantis] because he made some decisions that were courageous, and the fact is that the economy is relatively open and expanding. “

DeSantis responded by saying that he believes that local governments should have control over some aspects of health policy, but he believes that such guidelines should be of a “consultative” nature.
Miami-Dade County, Broward County, Palm Beach County, as well as Monroe County, all have local mask rules.
