At a 9News press conference on Tuesday, Joe Ellis announced that he will not seek any extension after his contract expires. His current contract, like that of John Elway, runs through March 2022. This means that Elway and Ellis can be hired in Denver after the next season.
“I don’t imagine extending this beyond perhaps just an interim period of some kind, if necessary,” said Ellis at a news conference for 9NEWS on Tuesday. “But that would be dedicated to finding a replacement as the club’s president or CEO, depending on who the next owner will be – be it Brittany or someone else – where this will end.”
Mike Klis detailed the whole situation very well in the post linked above and is worth reading.
The implications of this news can be enormous for the future of the franchise. With the legal battle between the Bowlen children going on and, as of now, unsolved, a sale is much more likely than a resolution, in my opinion.
With Ellis giving up so early, I think that may also indicate that he thinks the sale is almost certain. If the transfer of power went to Brittany Bowlen, he would probably need to stay for a while to help her acquire the day-to-day management of the franchise.
As a fan, I think this is a really good thing. I don’t believe that any of Bowlen’s sons showed Pat Bowlen’s passion and love for football, and they probably wouldn’t value the winning culture and the desire to compete for championships as much as Pat. A new owner could infuse blood and new ideas into the organization that could help it break free from the five-year routine it has been in since winning the Super Bowl 50.
The other caveat here is the immediate implications of research by the Broncos general manager. If I came back thinking a sale was likely, then why would any kind of highly sought after general manager talent want this job knowing that there could be a new property this year?
