Democrats want $ 3,600 per child in tax credits on Covid’s relief project

WASHINGTON – Congressional Democrats will release on Monday a proposal to add to the developing coronavirus relief package that would provide up to $ 3,600 per child for families throughout the year.

The IRS would distribute the money monthly, totaling $ 3,600 per child under 6 and $ 3,000 per child 6 to 17, based on taxpayer income, according to a draft plan obtained by NBC News.

The money would begin to be distributed in July, if the proposal were included in the Covid-19 relief measure that Democrats in the House and Senate are currently considering.

The plan, to be presented by the chairman of the House’s Methods and Resources Committee, Richard Neal, of Massachusetts, was first reported by The Washington Post.

“The pandemic is driving families increasingly into poverty and it is devastating. We are making Child Tax Credit more generous, more accessible and, by paying it monthly, that money will be the difference in a ceiling over someone’s head or the food on their table, ”said Neal in a statement provided to NBC News .

He added: “This is how the tax code should work for those who need it most, and while I am Chairman of the Forms and Means Committee, it is what you can expect from us.”

Senate Democrats and the White House have expressed support for the plan, an aide said.

This occurred at a time when Democrats in both chambers accelerated the process last week to approve a general aid package. President Joe Biden and the top Democrats have made it clear that they are prepared to pass the bill without the support of Republicans. The legislation would include $ 1,400 in direct checks to people based on income level. It would also provide benefits for the unemployed and fund the effort to rapidly vaccinate people across the country.
