Dearon “Deezer D” Thompson, who played nurse Malik McGrath in the long-running NBC medical drama ER, died on Thursday at the age of 55.
Thompson’s brother Marshawn told TMZ that the actor did not respond at his home in Los Angeles. The family believes he died of a heart attack – he previously underwent open heart surgery in 2009 – but the official cause of death has not been disclosed.
“I lost a dear friend yesterday,” wrote Noah Wyle on Instagram. “Deezer D, known to millions of ER fans as a nurse, Malik McGrath, died yesterday morning. He was one of the most creative and charismatic men I have ever met and his gospel of positivity took us out of many dark places. I’m going to miss him terribly. Please say a prayer for him and have a living thought for your family today. “
His colleague costar Mekhi Phifer also paid tribute. “What a special spirit we all lose!” he said. “From the first day I met him on the set of ER he absolutely made me feel at home and welcome. Thompson reappeared in all 15 seasons of ER, including the 1994 pilot and the end of the 2009 series. In all, he appeared in 190 episodes.
Before ER, Thompson had a leading role in the Chris Rock film CB4. Additional credits included Taking Down the House, The John Larroquette Showand Romy and Michelle High School Meeting. He also worked as a motivational speaker and hip hop artist.
Lyn Alicia Henderson, who appeared in ER as a nurse Pamela Olbes, she also paid tribute. “I am very sorry to hear of your passing,” she wrote. “He had a bigger spirit than life and we always had the best conversations!
