Deep South Rupununi suffers damage from earthquake – News Room Guyana

The regional authorities of Upper Takutu-Upper Esequibo (Region 9) confirmed that there was some damage to properties and land surfaces in the region due to the magnitude 5.7 earthquake that shook various parts of Guyana earlier on Sunday.

The Regional Response System is mobilized and ready to conduct assessments and support affected families, noted the Civil Defense Commission (CDC).

The earthquake was felt in Boa Vista, Brazil, and in Guyana at about 3:05 pm on Sunday, according to the German Center for Research in Geosciences (GFZ). It was reported that the earthquake reached a depth of 10 km below the epicenter near Boa Vista, in the Brazilian state of Roraima.

These shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than the deeper ones, as they are closer to the surface. And based on the Richter magnitude scale for earthquakes, a 5.9 earthquake falls between moderate to strong intervals.
