Brazil recorded 2,841 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday, the highest number of daily deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the Ministry of Health.

The total number of Covid-19 deaths in the country is now 282,127.

In addition, 83,926 new Covid-19 cases were reported on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases to 11,603,535.

On Monday, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced the appointment of cardiologist Marcelo Queiroga as the country’s fourth minister of health since last March’s epidemic. Queiroga is replacing the current minister, Army General Eduardo Pazuello, who has led the Ministry of Health since May 16, 2020.

The transition at the Ministry of Health will occur in a few weeks, according to Bolsonaro.

Meanwhile, governors in the hardest hit regions of the country have announced the adoption of night curfews and more restrictive measures to try to contain the spread of the virus.

Fourteen of the twenty-six Brazilian states, plus the Federal District, are under curfew – usually between 8 pm and 5 am – most of them applied in the last week.

In addition, 18 state governments have announced more restrictive measures in the past five days.
