Dead driver, passenger seriously injured when the van hits Ann Arbor Walgreens

ANN ARBOR, MI – An 82-year-old Ann Arbor man was killed on Wednesday afternoon when his vehicle pulled off the road and crashed into an Ann Arbor Walgreens.

Otis Jones suffered fatal injuries on December 23, when he collided with Walgreens at 3255 Washtenaw Ave., according to the Ann Arbor Police Department.

Rescuers were called at 3:56 pm to report a van crashing into the building. They arrived to find a van partially inside the building and balanced on top of a protective barrier outside, according to the Ann Arbor Fire Department.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

A passenger in her vehicle, 77-year-old Rose Jones, was trapped inside the raised van, officials said. Given the precarious nature of the van’s location, it took 45 minutes for rescue workers to get it out of the vehicle, officials said.

She was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital in critical condition and is now listed in stable condition, police said.

Two people inside the building at the time of the accident suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, officials said.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the accident and both wore seat belts, police said. The accident remains under investigation.
