DC Attorney General wants to interview Donald Trump Jr. as part of the inaugural fund abuse investigation

The interview request came after new information about Trump Jr.’s role was revealed in court documents earlier this week.

In January 2020, the DC attorney general’s office sued the Trump Organization and the Presidential Inauguration Committee alleging that they misused more than $ 1 million raised by the nonprofit “overpaying” for the use of event space at the Trump Hotel in Washington for the 2017 opening.

Earlier this week, the attorney general’s office said in a lawsuit it found new evidence during the course of its investigation that the president’s Inaugural Committee “unduly wasted his fund by paying nearly $ 50,000 to Loews Madison” for a block of hotel rooms booked by the Trump Organization.

“This reservation was secured by Donald Trump Jr.’s personal assistant at the Trump Organization. The contract was executed on behalf of the Trump Organization by a close personal friend of Donald Trump Jr. called Gentry Beach,” according to the court filing.

The President’s Inaugural Committee was not part of the contract, the attorney general’s office claims, but after the Trump Organization did not pay the bill, a collection agency contacted Rick Gates, a senior committee official, asking for payment. Gates, according to the case file, forwarded the invoice to the people who work with the inauguration’s finances.

Trump Organization officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Witness statements as part of the process have been ongoing for the past few months.

In December, the president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, was interviewed for more than five hours. Tom Barrack, chairman of the inaugural committee, was deposed on November 17, according to a lawsuit. Court documents indicate that Gates was also deposed.
