Call of Duty is a much bigger franchise than Apex Legends, of that there is no doubt. Activision’s games are the bestsellers in the first-person shooter genre and Infinity Ward made Warzone a huge success with Modern Warfare, but there is probably no better time to abandon the boat.
2020 was a landmark year for CoD. Warzone launched in March and has undoubtedly increased the franchise’s appeal to casual gamers, people who may not have bothered to buy the latest Call of Duty titles. Every major streamer in the world was jumping in Verdansk – from Dr. Disrespect to NICKMERCS – and the hype surrounding the game was off the charts.
The successes were recorded and will remain in the history of the developers, with more than 75 million downloads reported by Statista in August of that year.
In the months following Black Ops’s integration into the Cold War, which began in December 2020, it fell, to say the least. Just when you thought the cheating problems would end, it is common. When you thought that the success registration problems were over, they came back.
That raises the question, really, and that’s why do players keep coming back for a broken experience?
Current war zone traps
War zone players now wait a long time even for minor changes, like this Gulag overhaul last December.
Now, some players may say that there is nothing out there like Warzone, in terms of a great map experience and 150 people entering each time. That’s true. Gulag was a unique creation that no other Battle Royale game had ever experienced, and people loved it at first.
The loadouts aspect of the game was also classic Call of Duty, building its own class to take into battle. It would be easy to list the game’s unique features for days on end, but there are some glaring issues that you just don’t have to live with in other games – like Apex Legends.
Activision has taken the time now to implement an anti-cheat that is capable of protecting the integrity of the games, but they are still failing. The developers have detonated cheaters in rounds of tens, hundreds and thousands, but it is almost turning into a zombie game. These hackers create new accounts and return to the game, in greater numbers. There was no definitive victory with the current system and there may never be.
Apex keeps things fresh
Put the cheat aside – which is a huge issue, but one that everyone is aware of, however – there are some things in the Respawn Entertainment game that are unparalleled.
You will see a constant flurry of map changes in the game, whether on a season-to-season basis, or in bundles with the City Acquisitions that occur routinely. Monthly, we saw constant increases in in-game events for the community to have fun. The next is the Season 8 Anniversary Collection event – for example.
This usually includes the aforementioned Town Takeover – where a Legend receives a themed section of the map – and limited time modes (LTMs) that are always fun to play. When you consider all of this, in addition to the game’s daily challenges and new missions, Warzone seems obsolete in comparison.
There are unique game styles based on the Legend you choose, three equally popular maps to run (Kings Canyon, World Edge, Olympus), and also different skill levels required for certain weapons. In addition, there are some more basic updates to highlight.
Apex Legends makes the visit much better
Apex Legends players don’t know where the first circle will be when they land.
First of all, Apex Legends has an advantage in one of the most basic features, which is to immerse yourself in the action when the game starts. No one knows where the final circle will end before it reaches the ground. This is a feature highly requested by war zone players and would certainly improve the way players spread across the map in the early stages of the game.
In addition, the team also has the option of landing together. This is useful for several reasons, as it can keep your teammates closer, avoid the need for all three players to know where it is marked on the map, and give your team leader more influence.
This may not be as requested a feature as the changes to the first ring, but it is certainly a useful tool to ensure that less skilled teammates – say – do not disappear.
Top loot system
The color-coded system facilitates looting in Apex Legends, and the enemy’s loot remains in a Death Box to be easily carried.
Second, the looting system is at another level. Apex Legends is a big winner with this, as the color coding method for weapons, types of ammunition and rarities of other items make building your cargo a very easy process.
You also don’t have to press the same button over and over to get something, which is a complicated problem that Warzone players have to deal with. Withdrawing can be done at a rapid pace on the ground or in loot boxes, and the frustrating loot spill when a player dies in Warzone does not exist here. Everything is stored in a Death Box, which contains the contents of everything the dead enemy had before elimination. Again, it cuts through the annoying process of clicking things over and over to get the item you want.
Apex Legends ranking mode and competitive
Ranked mode is one of the best features of Apex Legends, popular with competitive and casual players.
The last point to highlight is that there is a dedicated classified mode. In Classifieds, players can make their way through different competitive levels, ranging from Bronze to Apex Predator. This is something that Warzone fans have been looking for for a long time.
There is also a higher skill ceiling in Apex Legends. Many of the weapons in the game have distinct characteristics that differentiate them from others in the loot group.
In Warzone, you can take a series of SMGs and ARs and not notice their differences, as they are very small. With the peculiarities of each weapon in Outlands comes a different way of playing, which means that you can become a medium / high skill player with one of the older weapons like the Flatline, but then fight with a new Repeater Rifle 30- 30.
There are not many weapons that are outdated in the Apex, so in that sense, there is also more balance. Never had a DMR or Mac-10 problem, for example, where everyone carries the same weapon because it is better than the rest.
There is a good balance for weapons in Apex Legends.
The players in this game need to hone their skills with a weapon or legend to improve, instead of building a ready-to-go class, call a porter and make sure your weapon is better (potentially) than your opponent. In this hypothetical scenario, we are also not taking into account that the enemy may well be a hacker, which is even more likely due to the lack of a serious anti-cheat.
To conclude, there is a small possibility that Activision will get it right and make some changes in the coming seasons to improve the experience. But in the meantime, Apex Legends is certainly a step forward. What’s not to love about Legends with different abilities, new content routinely featuring new characters and map changes, not to mention the feature updates already found in Warzone.
