Foo Fighters appeared in The Tonight Show Monday, February 9th, to present a song from your new album, Midnight remedy, while lead singer Dave Grohl joined Jimmy Fallon for an interview.
The Foos sent a characteristically oversized version of their track, “Waiting on a War”. The group even added a trio of background vocalists to the mix to help them take the music from their faint acoustic beginnings to their thunderous, grand guitar ending.
In his interview with Fallon, Grohl talked about the long process of launching Midnight remedy, who he said the band designed, pre-Covid, to be part of some noisy stadium shows that ultimately could not happen. He also shared a great story by David Bowie, saying that the two met at Bowie’s famous 50th anniversary concert in 1997, and then, a few years later, Grohl looked to see if Bowie wanted to sing on a track he wrote for a film. .
After waiting a long time for an answer, one finally arrived with Bowie politely declining the offer. Grohl, a little distraught at having just received an email from David Bowie, responded quickly with a direct thanks. Bowie then replied about a minute later: “Well, it is settled then. Now go fuck yourself. “
“I’m like, ‘Oh my God! Holy shit! David Bowie just sent me to fuck! ‘”Recalled Grohl. “So I answered the email – and I haven’t seen it since your birthday party at Madison Square Garden – I said, ‘Well, I think I’ll see you in another 15 years.’ And he said, ‘Not if I see you first.’ “
Grohl admitted it took him a while to realize that Bowie was being funny and didn’t really think he was an idiot. He added that the exchange launched erratic and silly correspondence over the years, where Bowie did things like randomly wishing him a happy new year in June. “I would say, ‘Drink sometime, right?'”, Grohl recalls. “And he immediately sent an email back and said, ‘I’m going, thank you.'”
