Dallas County reports 1,589 new cases of coronavirus, 16 more deaths

Dallas County reported 1,589 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, as well as another 16 deaths from COVID-19.

Eight of the latest victims were Dallas residents: two men in their 50s, a man and a woman in their 60s, two women in their 70s and two women in their 80s.

The other victims were two Garland men, one in his 70s and another in his 80s, who lived in a long-term care facility; two Grand Prairie men in their 80s; a Hutchins woman in her 60s; an Irving man in his 40s; a Mesquite woman in her 50s; and a Richardson woman in her 60s who lived in a long-term care facility.

Two of the women in their 60s, from Dallas and Richardson, had no underlying health problems that put them at greater risk of complications from COVID-19, officials said.

County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a written statement that the latest medical modeling from UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers shows that Dallas County is expected to have about 2,700 new COVID-19 cases in late January.

“We must remain vigilant in our efforts to stop and slow the spread of this virus,” said Jenkins.

Of the new cases, 1,351 were confirmed and 238 were likely.

The new reported cases bring the county total to 236,214 – 208,991 confirmed cases and 27,223 probable cases. The death toll is 1,887.

Health officials use hospitalizations, intensive care admissions and visits to emergency rooms as key metrics to track the real-time impact of COVID-19 in the county. In the 24-hour period ended on Monday, 1,160 patients with COVID-19 were in intensive care at hospitals in the municipality. During the same period, 505 visits to the emergency room were for symptoms of the disease.

According to state data, 87,704 people in Dallas County received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 15,021 are fully immunized.

Texas

Across the state, an additional 9,476 cases were reported on Tuesday – 9,381 new and 95 older cases that were recently reported by laboratories.

The state also recorded 310 deaths from COVID-19, increasing the number of victims to 32,394.

Of the new cases, 8,312 were confirmed and 1,069 were probable. Of the oldest cases, 53 were confirmed and 42 were likely.

The new notified cases raise the state total to 2,135,028 – 1,872,614 confirmed cases and 262,414 probable cases.

There are 13,928 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals, including 3,926 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. As of Monday, 24.2% of patients in the region of the hospital that covers the Dallas-Fort Worth area were COVID-19 patients – above the 15% limit the state has used to define high hospitalizations.

The statewide seven-day average positivity rate for molecular testing, based on the date of collection of the test sample, was 16.1% on Monday. For the antigen tests, the positivity rate for the same period was 9.8%. A molecular test is considered more accurate and is sometimes also called a PCR test; an antigen test is also called a rapid test. Governor Greg Abbott said a positivity rate above 10% is a cause for concern.

According to state data, 1,181,483 people in Texas received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 177,193 are fully immunized.

Tarrant County

Tarrant County reported 1,929 cases of coronavirus and 12 deaths on Tuesday.

The latest victims include five Arlington residents: two men in their 60s, two women in their 70s and one man in their 80s. The others were two Fort Worth residents, a woman in her 50s and a man in her 70s; a Bedford woman in her 80s; a Crowley woman in her 60s; a Hurst man in his 70s; a Richland Hills woman in her 80s; and a man from Sansom Park in his 40s.

Ten of the victims had high-risk health conditions, officials said.

Of the new cases, 1,841 were confirmed and 88 were likely.

The new reported cases bring the county total to 197,447 – 171,001 confirmed cases and 26,446 probable cases. The death toll is 1,904.

According to the city, 1,474 people have been hospitalized with the virus until this Monday.

According to state data, 62,773 people in Tarrant County received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 5,925 are fully immunized.

Collin County

The state added 879 cases of coronavirus and nine deaths to the total for Collin County on Tuesday.

No details about the latest victims were available.

Of the new cases, 794 were confirmed and 85 were likely.

The new reported cases bring the county total to 64,721 – 56,146 confirmed cases and 8,575 probable cases. The death toll is 483.

According to the municipality, 522 people are hospitalized with the virus.

According to state data, 31,344 people in Collin County received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 4,304 are fully immunized.

Denton County

Denton County reported 1,064 cases of coronavirus and eight deaths on Tuesday.

The latest victims were a Corinthian man in his 50s, a Denton woman in her 70s who lived in the Brinker Senior Care Center, a Lewisville man in her 80s who lived in Cedar Crest, a woman in Northlake with more 80s, a Pilot Point man in his 70s who lived in the Pilot Point Care Center and three people who lived in unincorporated Denton County – a woman in her 70s and a man and woman over 80 .

Of the new cases, 739 were confirmed and 325 were likely.

The new notified cases bring the county total to 47,336 – 38,212 confirmed cases and 9,124 probable cases. The death toll is 257.

According to the municipality, 204 people are hospitalized with the virus.

According to state data, 19,017 people in Denton County received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 2,411 are fully immunized.

The Texas Department of Health Services has taken over the reports for these other northern Texas counties. In some counties, new data may not be reported every day.

  • Rockwall County: 8,222 cases (6,873 confirmed and 1,349 likely), 78 deaths.
  • Kaufman County: 11,450 cases (9,962 confirmed and 1,488 likely), 154 deaths.
  • Ellis County: 16,403 cases (14,457 confirmed and 1,946 likely), 201 deaths.
  • Johnson County: 14,435 cases (12,872 confirmed and 1,563 probable), 213 deaths.
