Dallas County reports 10 deaths from coronavirus, 484 cases; Tarrant County adds 13 deaths

Dallas County reported an additional 10 deaths from COVID-19 and 484 new cases of coronavirus on Monday.

One of the latest victims was a Dallas man in his 40s who had no underlying health problems, officials said.

The others were three residents of Garland, a man and two women in their 70s; an Addison woman in her 70s; a woman from Cedar Hill in her 60s; a DeSoto man in his 70s; a woman from the Farmers’ Branch in her 60s; a Grand Prairie woman in her 80s; and an Irving man in his 70s. All but one Garland woman had underlying diseases.

Shortly after 6 pm on Monday, County Judge Clay Jenkins tweeted that 100 extra doses of the Pfizer vaccine were available in the county’s Fair Park megasite on a first-come, first-served basis and asked people to rush to the scene. Half an hour later, the vaccines ran out.

More than 200,000 doses were administered at that location, Jenkins said in a written statement.

“Vaccination scenes like this are taking place across northern Texas and if we can get enough vaccine here, we can achieve collective immunity in Dallas County in June,” he said.

Of the new cases, 357 were confirmed and 127 were likely. The numbers bring the county’s total cases to 288,700, including 250,888 confirmed and 37,812 probable. The death toll is 3,394.

County officials said 41 of the new cases reported occurred among high school students who attended a dinner and ball on March 13.

Health officials use hospitalizations, intensive care admissions and visits to emergency rooms as key metrics to track the real-time impact of COVID-19 in the county. Due to a delay in weekend reports, these numbers will be available next Tuesday.

According to the state, 522,427 people in Dallas County received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 266,445 – 13.2% of the county’s population aged 16 and over – are fully vaccinated.

Texas

Across the state, an additional 2,532 cases were reported on Monday, including 1,769 new cases and 763 older cases recently reported by laboratories.

The state also recorded 65 deaths from COVID-19, bringing its number to 46,478.

Of the new cases, 1,516 were confirmed and 253 were likely. Of the oldest cases, 212 were confirmed and 551 were probable.

The state’s total cases are now 2,747,693, including 2,368,222 confirmed and 379,471 probable.

There are 3,447 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals, including 693 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. On Sunday, 4.5% of patients in the region of the hospital that covers the Dallas-Fort Worth area were patients with COVID-19 – below the 15% limit the state uses to define high hospitalizations.

The statewide seven-day average positivity rate for molecular testing, based on the date of collection of the test sample, was 5.8% on Sunday. For antigen tests, the positivity rate for the same period was 2.8%. A molecular test is considered more accurate and is sometimes also called a PCR test; an antigen test is also called a rapid test. Governor Greg Abbott said a positivity rate above 10% is a cause for concern.

According to the state, 6,345,029 people in Texas received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 3,196,293 – 14.2% of the state’s population aged 16 and over – are fully vaccinated.

Tarrant County

Tarrant County reported 13 deaths and 143 cases on Monday.

The latest victims include seven men and six women in their 30s and 80s.

Five victims were from Fort Worth, four were from Arlington, two were residents of Bedford and one lived in Grapevine and Watauga. All had underlying high-risk health conditions.

Of the new cases, 101 were confirmed and 42 were likely. The numbers bring the county’s total cases to 249,150, including 210,697 confirmed and 38,453 probable. The death toll is 3,222.

According to the municipality, 209 people are hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state, 391,772 people in Tarrant County received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 213,630 – 13.4% of the county’s population aged 16 or older – are fully vaccinated.

Collin County

The state added two deaths and 152 cases to the Collin County total on Monday.

No details on the latest victims were available.

Of the new cases, 147 were confirmed and five were likely. The numbers bring the county’s total cases to 85,702, including 71,525 confirmed and 14,177 probable. The death toll is 782.

According to the city, 161 people are hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state, 247,741 people in Collin County received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 128,664 – 16.0% of the county’s population aged 16 and over – are fully vaccinated.

Denton County

Denton County reported 186 cases on Monday. No additional deaths were reported.

The new reported cases bring the county’s total cases to 71,071, including 52,853 confirmed and 18,218 probable. The death toll is 453.

According to the city, 53 people are hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state, 174,148 people in Denton County received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, while 100,672 – 14.3% of the county’s population aged 16 and over – are fully vaccinated.

The Texas Department of Health Services has taken over the reports from these other counties in North Texas. In some counties, new data may not be reported every day.
