Daft Punk, the Parisian duo responsible for some of the most popular pop and dance songs ever made, broke up. They broke the news with an 8-minute video titled “Epilogue”, excerpt from their 2006 film Electroma. Asked if Daft Punk was no more, his longtime aide Kathryn Frazier confirmed the news to Pitchfork, but gave no reason for the break.
Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo formed Daft Punk in Paris in 1993, helping to define the French touch style of house music. Her debut album, 1997 Homework, was a milestone in dance music, featuring classic singles “Around the World” and “Da Funk”. With the launch of your tracking, Discovery, in 2001, the duo started to make public appearances with the clothes of robots that became their trademark. The singles “One More Time” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” consolidated them as global superstars. His brand in the popular imagination continued to deepen in subsequent years, with records including the third album Human Despite everything, Live LP Alive 2007, and the Tron: Legacy soundtrack album.
Twenty years of career, Daft Punk exploded once again with “Get Lucky”, the main single from his 2013 album Random access memories. The ubiquitous single sold millions of copies around the world and won two Grammys for the duo and guests Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams; the following single “Lose Yourself to Dance”, also with Pharrell, received a few more awards. Random access memories, which is his latest album so far, has led to a spectacular set of Coachella headlines that encapsulated his magic and mythology. “When you know how a magic trick is done, it’s then depressing, ”Bangalter told Pitchfork in a 2013 cover story.“ We focus on the illusion because revealing how it’s done instantly turns off the feeling of excitement and innocence. ”
The album earned Daft Punk three more Grammys, including Album of the Year. In the year of their release, they were also credited with co-producing several tracks by Kanye West Yeezus, including the formidable opening trio of “On Sight”, “Black Skinhead” and “I Am a God”. They would collaborate with Weeknd on the 2016 single “Starboy” – Billboard’s first single from Daft Punk at the top of the charts – as well as “I Feel It Coming”.
