Daboll, Chargers, O’Connell, Bears, Gannon, Falcons, Jackson

Before the Chargers surprisingly hired the Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley be your new coach last night, Accounts OC Brian Daboll was widely considered the favorite for this job. After missing the opportunity to train Justin herbert, it looks like Daboll is going to set things up in Buffalo and wait until next year for a head coach presentation. A source close to Daboll said he “will be the big name of the head coach next year,” according to ESPN’s Dianna Russini (Twitter Link)

This seems to indicate that Daboll is not a serious candidate for, or is not interested in, the jobs of Texans and Eagles, which are the only two real vacancies Lions must hire Dan Campbell. Russini also notes that agents and other league candidates also viewed Staley’s hiring as a surprise. Daboll also interviewed the Jets before hiring them Robert Saleh. Highly praised for his work in development Josh Allen in a first-rate quarterback, it looks like the Allen / Daboll partnership in Buffalo will last at least another year, which is music to the ears of Accounts fans. Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, later confirmed in a tweet that Daboll will indeed return in Sean McDermott’s personnel in 2021.

Here is more of the coaching ratings:

  • Speaking of Chargers, as they have just hired a defensive mind, finding someone to command the attack is the new priority. To that end, offensive coordinator Rams Kevin O’Connell is a possibility for the Chargers’ OC show, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network tweets. Pelissero notes that he became very close to Staley during their time together in Sean McVay’s employees. He also points out that, as it would technically be a side play for O’Connell, he would need McVay’s blessing to leave. Obviously, since he was going to call the shots with the Chargers, it would still be a big step forward, and McVay previously left his old OC Matt LaFleur make a lateral move for the Titans, as it came with responsibilities to call it a game, so he would probably do the same here. O’Connell is a former Patriots QB of the third round, who spent 2019 as Washington’s offensive coordinator. We heard that Herbert “loves” his current offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, and Pelissero again reiterates that it is possible that he prevented Anthony Lynn’s employees.
  • O Bears I need a new defensive coordinator with Chuck Pagano retire, and obviously with Matt Nagy being an offensive mind is a crucial role for Chicago. They are starting to search the candidates, and the team has made a request to interview the Colts defense technician. Jonathan Gannon for work, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic tweets. Gannon is not the highest profile candidate, as he was a quality control coach in 2017, until he was hired as a DB trainer in Frank Reich Colts inaugural team in 2018. We also heard that the current coach Jay Rodgers and security coach Sean Desai they are internal candidates for Pagano’s succession.
  • New Falcons coach Arthur Smith he will certainly be commanding the team’s attack, but it looks like he is still planning to hire an offensive coordinator. We also heard over the weekend that the Bears pass game coordinator Dave Ragone was one of the first favorites for the role of OC, but he is apparently not the only candidate. Atlanta interviewed Panthers receiver coach Frisman Jackson for work, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network tweets. Jackson spent five years with the Browns as a player in the early 2000s and coached the Titans’ receivers in 2017, when Smith was training tight ends there, so he has that connection working for him. He then went to Baylor before following Matt Rhule from there to Carolina.
