QUINCY, PASTA. (WHDH) – An armed robbery suspect who stole a Rockland police car and led authorities in a wild chase was shot dead by a member of the state police’s STOP team on Friday morning after a standoff in Quincy, officials said.
The 36-year-old man, whose name has not been released, tried to get out of the car with a patrol rifle in hand at Burgin Parkway, near the BJ gas station, which prompted the police to shoot, according to public prosecutor Michael Morrissey.
He was transported to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at about 10:15 am
About three hours earlier, the suspect reportedly stole an undisclosed amount of money from a 7-Eleven in Rockland while armed with a gun before fleeing on foot to a nearby neighborhood
Neighbors on Brookside Road told Toni Bono that the suspect had tried to enter several houses.
“He said he was attacked by two children and asked to come in and everyone said no and then the last lady said, ‘I’m going to call the police’, and when she said that, he ran into the forest,” she said.
The suspect then stole a police vehicle from Rockland before leading the police in a chase in Quincy, hitting several vehicles in the process, Morrissey said.
An Abington policeman lost control of his vehicle during the chase and hit a pole.
Several agencies surrounded the Rockland police patrol car at Burgin Parkway, near exit 42, while a state police STOP team and crisis negotiators responded to the scene.
The suspect managed to take off again in the vehicle, but was soon stopped at Burgin Parkway by the BJ gas station.
The suspect began to walk out of the passenger door armed with a patrol rifle, prompting a member of the state police’s STOP team to shoot him, Morrissey said.
He received help on the spot and was transported to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The situation temporarily affected the Red Line and the urban train service and led to the closure of roads in the surrounding area.
No additional information was released.
