PlayStation 5 owners don’t have an option to change their console’s front panels at the moment, but that could change in the near future thanks to the red, black and blue options of the CMP Shells. Previously sold through “Platestation.com”, the third-party manufacturer was forced to cancel pre-sales in November, citing Sony’s threat of legal action. However, the company has applied for a patent for its design and will apparently be able to sell these faceplates without fear of legal action. According to the CMP website, its faceplates feature a slightly different design than Sony’s, which also offers superior ventilation.
An Instagram video of the CMP Shells faceplates being stapled to the PS5 can be found below.
From the video, it looks like the front plates must be very easy to attach! The company allows players to select between cards compatible with the digital and physical versions of the console. Customers have additional options in addition to the front panel covers, including covers that allow them to change the color of the intermediate part and the controller.
Only 1000 units of each shell will be offered, and they can be purchased for $ 49.99. Fans who want to match the controller to the console can get a controller skin as part of a package that includes the shells and a vinyl mid-range for $ 69.99. Intermediate strips are also sold separately for $ 15, so buyers can mix and match if they wish. More information can be found on the company’s website here.
It will be interesting to see if the legal issues have been fully resolved or not! CMP Shells looks very confident that Sony will not be able to prevent the front ends from being sold this time, and expects them to start shipping in late February. It remains to be seen whether or not Sony is considering offering an official option to replace the PS5’s front plates, but it looks like this may have been defeated. Those interested in purchasing the shells will have to cross their fingers so that everything goes according to plan this time.
