Curfew, canceled New Year’s Eve celebrations affect distressed bars and restaurants :: WRAL.com

– Almost everyone expects to put 2020 in the rear view mirror.

This year, New Year’s Eve comes with the disappointment that the celebrations will not be as they were before. And the lack of celebrations in the city center is yet another big blow for those already struggling in bars and restaurants.

December 31 is traditionally a busy day in the city center, as event coordinators and businessmen plan the arrival of large crowds. Organizers are said to be setting up stages, blocking streets and making security plans.

This year, the streets of downtown Raleigh are quiet and empty – a very different scenario from previous years.

In the past, more than 40,000 people came to see the iconic Acorn Drop – and the fireworks that followed.

The cancellation of this event, combined with the curfew at 10 pm, is yet another blow to the restaurants and bars that usually get crowded this evening.

A restaurant owner told WRAL News that he expects to make only a quarter of what sales were in previous years.

Locals can, however, help restaurants this evening. Business owners suggest that you buy takeaway food at a locally owned establishment to celebrate the New Year with a good meal in the safety and comfort of your home.
