Microsoft may have encountered problems with the last run of Windows 10 cumulative updates, with users reporting that KB4598299 (for Windows 10 2004) and KB4598301 (for Windows 10 1909) were causing application crashes and even BSOD issues.
The updates contained improvements for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 to address the following issues:
- Corrects a scrolling problem when the DPI scale is not 100% and the user is scrolling at the end of the TreeView.
- Corrects an issue where ASP.Net applications fail during precompilation.
- Includes reliability improvements for automatic native image generation task.
In Microsoft feedback forums, users are reporting numerous application failures that are fixed when uninstalling updates. Some are even reporting boot loops for operating system failure.
Microsoft has confirmed problems with KB4598301 and said it is “working to release a fix”.
If you are affected and cannot wait for the fix, the most effective mitigation seems to be to simply uninstall the updates in Control Panel> Uninstall a program> View installed updates, search for the KB number and click the uninstall button.
