Cummins closes Tennessee plant and moves operations to South Carolina

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Indiana-based engine manufacturer Cummins Inc. said it plans to close its Tennessee plant and transfer its operations to South Carolina.

Cummins spokeswoman Katie Zarich said on Friday that operations at the ReCon Memphis plant, which rebuilds turbochargers, will be consolidated at a plant in Charleston, South Carolina, in the third quarter of this year.

The Memphis plant currently has 300 employees, said Zarich.

The main reason for the closure is because the turbochargers are lasting longer, “decreasing the demand for remanufactured turbochargers,” Zarich said in a statement.

“We understand that this announcement brings uncertainty and we plan to provide significant support to minimize the impact on our employees, their families, our suppliers and local communities,” she said.

The Columbus-based company designs and manufactures engines powered by diesel and natural gas. Cummins also offers new and rebuilt parts and engines.
