The Cubs agreed to an agreement with the Fathers to send ace Yu Darvish in a five-by-two blockbuster, according to multiple reports. The business is pending medical examinations, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.
The deal, according to reports, also includes Darvish’s personal catcher, Victor Caratini, going to the Fathers, who in return are sending the Cubs holder, Zach Davies, and Reginald Preciado, Owen Caissie, Ismael Mena and Yeison Santana – three of whom are teenagers.
Darvish’s value as Cub has never been higher than it is now. The 34-year-old finished second in the voting for the 2020 NL Cy Young Award, after a dominant performance in the 60-game season. In 12 games, the right-handed was 8-3 (tied first in baseball in wins), boasting 2.01 ERA and 0.96 WHIP, hitting 93 hitters compared to 14 walks in 76 innings.
The Cubs signed a lucrative six-year contract with Darvish in February 2018, although he only made eight games that season due to a triceps illness. After a crash in the first half of 2019, he took off after the All-Star break, holding an ERA of 2.76 in 13 matches before his 2020 Cy Young campaign.
Darvish, four-time All-Star and baseball’s all-time leader in nine (11.1) eliminations, owes $ 60 million in the last three years of his contract. The Cubs are supposedly eating some of that salary.
Caratini has developed a great relationship picking up Darvish in the past two seasons (2.80 ERA, 196 1/3 innings). The 27-year-old pitcher is a 0.250 / .327 / .372 hitter in parts of four major league seasons.
Davies, 28 in February, is a six-year veteran of the big league who spent 2015-19 with the Brewers. Milwaukee traded him with San Diego last winter and he went 7-4 with an ERA of 2.73 and WHIP 1,067 in 12 matches in 2020. He has a career of 3.79 ERA and 1.275 WHIP in 123 career matches.
Davies is a lead ball launcher (average speed of 88.4 mph in 2020) that relies on inducing soft contact and balls on the ground. He is under the control of the club until 2021 and is expected to earn about $ 8 million in arbitration.
The Padres hired Preciado, a shortstop, outside of Panama during the 2019 international subscription period for $ 1.3 million. The 17-year-old hitter with line-to-line contact skills is San Diego’s 11th prospect, according to the MLB Pipeline.
Cassie, who turned 18 in July, is a Canadian high school player and the choice of the San Diego runoff in 2020. He is a six-foot outfielder with a genuine right-hand man and a brute force for lefties. Cassie is the Fathers’ number 13 prospect.
The Fathers signed Mena for $ 2.2 million from the Dominican Republic during the 2019-20 international subscription period. The 18-year-old outfielder hits and throws with his left hand, is athletic with more speed and is a contact club. He is the prospect of Fathers No. 15.
Santana, 20, signed with the Fathers during the 2017-18 international signing period. He’s a shortstop and spent 2019 at the novice ball. He is the general prospect of Fathers No. 16.
With Darvish headed to San Diego, Kyle Hendricks and Alec Mills are the only remaining participants in the top 5 of the Cubs’ 2020 rotation. Adbert Alzolay and Davies intend to join them in 2021, leaving depth as a significant issue to be addressed. This may involve a reunion with Jon Lester, in which both sides have expressed interest, and potentially possible Brailyn Marquez, Tyson Miller and Cory Abbott.
At the very least, Cubs seem to need a veteran for beginners.
This is the Fathers’ second box office success in a few days. San Diego general manager AJ Preller also acquired Rays star Blake Snell on Sunday night, according to reports. Preller, a former member of the Rangers office, helped Texas withdraw Darvish from Japan nine years ago.
