Cruella De Vil, Disney’s dog-killing antagonist 101 Dalmatians, is finally stealing the spotlight. And the first trailer for his independent film has extreme Harley Quinn /Birds of prey vibrations.
You may be thinking to yourself: Well, how did Cruella De Vil became the fashionista who loves fur and kills dogs that we all know and love to hate? Certainly, you don’t just wake up one day and say, “Yes, I’m going to kill dogs because of their delicious stained skin and also model myself to look like a revived corpse with dramatic black and white e-girl hair before the invention of the internet!” There must be some escalation to the whole Cruella De Vil story, right?
We will, Cruella – a live action prequel about the notorious fashionista – delves into the origins of Cruella De Vil. “I wasn’t for everyone,” she said in the narration in the first trailer. “I think they were always afraid that I was a psycho. ”A manic laugh.
Taking place in 1970s London, the film explores Estella De Vil’s slow descent into dog skin obsession. Frankly, it looks and sounds like something out of a psychological thriller instead of a Disney movie. Emma Stone stars as the villain, with Emma Thompson as head of a fashion house that hired her. Glenn Close is going to go crazy.
Cruella is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 28.
