Covid vaccine: More than 20 million people in the UK have already received their first dose

More than 20 million people in the UK have already received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, said the health secretary.

Matt Hancock posted a video on his Twitter account with the ad and thanked “each person who came to receive the jab”.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted that more than 20 million people have already been vaccinated across the UK – it is absolutely fantastic.

“I want to thank each person who came to receive the jab because we know with increasing confidence that the jab protects you, protects your community and is also the way out of it for all of us.”

Nadhim Zahawi, Minister of Vaccines, also celebrated the news, tweeting: “BINGO! A score of 20 million people was vaccinated (1st dose). What an achievement for February 2021. What a team! Proud to be with you on this journey. “

The number of people who received the first dose of a vaccine on Saturday was 19.6 million.

NHS England said another two million people, aged 60 to 63, are about to receive invitations to be vaccinated.

This next group will begin receiving letters on Monday explaining how they can make an appointment to receive a vaccine.

Professor Stephen Powis, NHS national medical director, said: “The NHS vaccination program, the largest in healthcare history and the fastest in Europe, is going strong.

“I would like to thank my colleagues at the NHS, along with all the volunteers and others who work on the program, for their hard work, which saw more than 17 million jabs given in a matter of weeks.

“I would recommend it to anyone who has been asked to accept the offer – no matter when you were invited, you can still introduce yourself and protect yourself and others.”
