A new study in India found that people who wear glasses are three times less likely to contract the virus.
The researchers suggest it is because they are less likely to touch the eyes – which can be a significant route of infection.
A previous study in China found that only 5% of those hospitalized with COVID wore glasses, while about 30% of the population wears glasses.
The study was conducted last summer in the Kanpur Dehat district. It involved 304 patients aged 10 to 80 years.
According to the report, they all experienced symptoms of coronavirus and about 60 were considered longtime glass users.
The study authors noted that COVID-19 infection with the eyes “is extremely rare”, but they said that droplets of the virus can easily go from the eyes to the nose or mouth.
