COVID NYC update: Connecticut patient at New York City hospital tests positive for South African coronavirus variant

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – A patient in a New York City hospital tested positive for South Africa’s COVID-19 variant.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement during his briefing on Monday, saying the patient was transferred from Connecticut to New York hospital.

Officials say there is no evidence of any spread in the state of New York to date.

“The South African variant, they care about how lethal it is and how it relates to the vaccine,” said Cuomo.

The Connecticut State Department of Health confirmed the positive in a statement.

“Governor Lamont and state public health officials today announced that variant B.1.351 of the COVID-19 virus, the so-called” South African “variant, has been detected in a Connecticut patient who is currently hospitalized out of state with the virus . The condition of the individual is improving. This is the first known case of variant B.1.351 in a Connecticut resident. “

Meanwhile, officials say 3.2 million have received their vaccines across the state and more than 1 million New Yorkers.

The positivity rate across the state is 3.53%.

Long Island continues to have the highest positivity in the regions, 4.62%, while Mid-Hudson has the second highest positivity, 4.53%.

The Bronx continues to have the greatest positivity in NYC, with 6.11%.
