COVID NY update: Yankee Stadium opens as vaccination mega-site for Bronx residents

NEW YORK (WABC) – Yankee Stadium was officially opened as a mass vaccination site for COVID-19 at 8 am Friday morning, with the help of a Yankee legend.

Mariano Rivera joined Mayor Bill de Blasio on Friday afternoon at the location, which is only available to residents of the Bronx. A consultation is required, which can be done by visiting Somosvaccinations.com or by calling 1-833-SomosNY.

Nominations are still available, said the mayor as he encouraged eligible Bronx residents to apply. About 300 appointments were made only on Thursday by city officials who probed the Bronx.

While the stadium serves as a vaccination site from 8 am to 8 pm daily, the mayor said it would be done 24 hours with more supplies.

State officials say they have 15,000 appointments ready for next week, but there are concerns that they are not scheduled quickly enough.

“Something the city and the state strongly agree on: we have to take actions that really support equity,” said de Blasio. “The Bronx was hit hard by the COVID crisis. This place – this historic place, this incredible place – will be for the people of the Bronx.”

Officials have been doing the job of convincing eligible people that the vaccine is safe.

The clinic is run by a well-known name – SOMOS Community Care – with injections administered by doctors who work and live in the Bronx.

“Trust exists,” said SOMOS President Dr. Ramon Tallaj. “They believe in us and that is why it is so important that we are choosing to do this. And we are ready. People need us so that the vaccine is given to people in our community.”

There were no fans allowed in the stands last season, so today is the first time that the general public has been able to enter Yankee Stadium since 2019.

“Don’t worry, I’m not worried,” a resident told Eyewitness News. “I trust science and what they are trying to do to people in relation to everyone’s health.”

In addition to the stadium, the state is also opening 35 new pop-up vaccination sites in churches, community centers and public housing in New York.

Citi Field is also being planned to be used as a separate location, but there are currently not enough doses.
