COVID NY Update: State runs out of COVID vaccine, using 2nd dose as 1st dose until the federal government, Cuomo says

NEW YORK (WABC) – Both New York City and New York State have completely depleted the envious vaccines, with the next delivery not scheduled until the beginning of next week.

The news comes as more and more hospitals cancel vaccination appointments without further appointments scheduled until Monday.

15 vaccine centers have also been closed.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is blaming the now ex-Trump administration for opening many categories of eligibility without increasing the offer.

“It should have been open as you had allocation. Anyway, that’s not what we did, it’s not what they did. And now you have a period of confusion and anxiety because you’re trying to reach seven million people at 250,000 a week, “Said Cuomo.

Another quarter of a million doses will arrive in time for next week, but state officials say that is far from enough.

Some have suggested the use of second doses, which are stored, as first doses.

During a visit to a pop-up site for the COVID-19 vaccine at a NYCHA complex in Brooklyn on Saturday, Cuomo said this would only be possible with the collaboration of the federal government.

“The reason the federal government has to agree is because they have to agree that they will send you a second enough dose in the future. Otherwise, you want them to give people their first doses and then you don’t have a second dose. for them, “said Cuomo.

Health experts say that administering the second dose of the vaccine within the deadline set by federal guidelines is critical to ensuring long-term protection.

So far, more than one million people in the state have received their first dose of the vaccine.

In a briefing on Friday, Cuomo said that deliveries for the week six allocations, about 250,400 doses, are on the way, but those deliveries “are delivered by the federal government by various means and arrive at different times throughout the week”.

The state is capable of administering about 80,000 doses a day and could easily make 100,000 doses a day, said Cuomo.

“By the time the vaccines arrive, our goal is to put them in the arms as quickly as possible. 250,400 doses a week are not enough,” said Cuomo.
