The United States has seen a rapid turnaround with regard to the trend of recently reported COVID cases. After reaching a national daily average of more than 300,000 in the first week of January, most numbers have dropped dramatically in one month, as coast-to-coast states report decreases in positive tests, hospitalizations and deaths. But the latest batch of data shows that a trio of states are currently going against the national trend, as COVID cases are starting to increase there again. Last week, new reported cases of COVID in the U.S. fell 25 percent compared to the previous seven days, representing the biggest drop in a single week since the pandemic began in March, according to Reuters. But officials still warn that highly contagious variants of the virus continue to spread, with some fearing that this could reverse progress made in reducing the numbers.
“I’m asking everyone to keep their guard up,” Rochelle Walensky, MD director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said on February 8. “The continued proliferation of variants remains a major concern and is a threat that can reverse the recent positive trends that we are seeing.”
So far, the CDC reports that emerging variant cases have been reported in at least 33 states. But there are already some places that have seen cases soar again, despite the national trend.
