COVID infections among vaccinated people are very rare

Fully vaccinated people can still get COVID, but it is very rare, according to two studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

By the numbers: A study published on Tuesday found that only four of the 8,121 fully vaccinated employees at the Southwestern Medical Center at the University of Texas at Dallas were infected.

  • Another study found that seven of the 14,990 health workers vaccinated in Los Angeles hospitals tested positive.
  • Some of the positive health professionals had mild symptoms, but some were asymptomatic, suggesting that the vaccines were protective, Francesca Torriani, the study’s lead researcher, told the New York Times.

What they are saying: “Currently, there is no evidence that COVID-19 after vaccination is occurring because of changes in the virus,” Kristen Nordlund, a CDC spokeswoman, told Axios.

  • “Based on what we know about vaccines for other diseases and initial clinical trial data, experts believe that taking the COVID-19 vaccine can also help prevent you from becoming seriously ill, even if you take COVID-19.
