Covid in NY: state still finding thousands of new cases a day

Albany, NY – New York is still finding thousands of new cases of Covid-19 a day.

The state confirmed an additional 5,807 new cases on Sunday and reported an additional 127,005 test results. Although new cases per day have declined since almost 20,000 on January 14, daily totals are still much higher than in summer and early fall.

Daily totals used to be less than 1,000, but the state was also running fewer tests at that time.

A total of 4,517 people were in New York hospitals due to the coronavirus on Sunday, an increase of 31. Hospitalizations have fallen since they rose to more than 9,000 in January.

A total of 923 people in New York were in intensive care units with Covid-19 yesterday, minus four, and 614 were intubated, five.

Another 58 people died from the virus yesterday, bringing the death toll across the state to 39,585. New deaths per day have declined since reaching more than 200 on January 13.

They remain higher than the daily single-digit totals seen in summer and early fall.

The percentage of people testing positive for the virus across the state was 4.57% on Sunday and the seven-day average for the statewide positivity rate was 3.22%, up from 3.15% on the day previous.

The seven-day average for the positive rate in central New York was 0.82%, down from 0.84% ​​the previous day.

New York now has 1,734,213 confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
