COVID-19 vaccine: Veterans line up for vaccines in Philadelphia; Delaware dentists take the call

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – With the launch of the COVID-19 vaccine, President Joe Biden wants to administer 100 million injections in his first 100 days.

On Saturday, across the Delaware Valley, there was an effort to get those most in need, starting with veterans.

At Philadelphia VA Medical Center, veterans aged 75 and over and those with chronic health conditions rolled up their sleeves to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Marine Corps veteran Ed Murray says he was initially apprehensive about the shooting, but realized that the benefits outweighed the risks.

“I think it is extremely important if you want to stay safe, keep your community safe, keep your family safe,” said Murray.

VA officials are in the midst of a campaign to vaccinate as many veterans as possible.

“We are very lucky here in VA to be able to provide large-scale vaccination to our veteran population who tend to be a needy and really vulnerable population,” said Matt Garin, Deputy Head of Patient Safety and Quality at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center .

In Delaware, part of the implementation includes getting more health workers to administer the doses.

Three dentists received training and vaccinated 150 people on Saturday.

“To help everyone, I think that’s really what this is about,” said Dr. Erik Bradley of Dental Associates of Delaware. “It is about giving back as far as possible and helping the state and the nation to rise again.”

Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties have published websites that allow you to pre-register and show your interest in receiving the vaccine.
