Thirteen additional cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Humboldt County today, bringing the total number of county residents tested positive for the virus to 3,419.

In related news, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) updated a Youth Sports Guidance FAQ on Wednesday to declare “age-appropriate supervision should be limited to a single adult (or immediate relative older than the sport participant). ”

Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman said the state released updated guidelines for recreational and youth sports on February 19 and took nearly a month to provide this specific information about viewers. “In the absence of guidance from the state, we developed a plan that would allow up to two adults to attend, with adherence to security measures that include the use of facial coverage and the distancing of non-family members,” he said. “We will continue to support common sense rules and regulations based on logic and what is best for Humboldt County.”

This afternoon, the CDPH updated its Youth Sports Guide to clarify that side cheering is now allowed as a sport of moderate contact. The guidance states that the side crowd is considered comparable to the competitive crowd and, as such, must follow all the requirements of other moderate contact sports outdoors.

Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said the sheriff’s office is not here to dictate age-appropriate supervision for youth sports and will not be present at these sporting events to monitor the supervision of the parents of their young athletes .

“Throughout this pandemic, the Sheriff’s Office has taken an educational approach to COVID-19 precautions, rather than a law enforcement approach,” he said. “We feel that this approach continues to be successful in our municipality.”

Anyone who participates in youth sporting events should practice the safety precautions COVID-19, including maintaining social distance, wearing a facial cover, avoiding mixing families and staying at home if you feel sick.
