The updated Youth and Adult Sports Guidance takes effect today

The California Department of Public Health has released updated guidelines to allow recreational sports for youth and adults to resume practice and competition at all levels of the state’s “Safer Economy Project” when certain conditions are met.

As of today, the state will allow competitions in high and low contact sports to resume, regardless of the indoor or outdoor environment, if a county’s case rate is 14 or lower. Spectators are not allowed in any sport, but the state allows age-appropriate supervision of youth sports by members of the immediate family. All school and community teams and organizations are expected to follow state guidance.

The general guidance for all sports includes the following:

  • All coaches and players are strongly encouraged to take the COVID-19 test on a weekly basis.
  • Players must wear facial covers when they are not actively participating in the sport.
  • Coaches, support staff and observers must wear facial covers at all times.
  • Drinks and other personal items or equipment must not be shared.
  • Mixing between families before or after any practice or competition must follow the state’s collection guidelines.
  • The capacity limits for indoor sports activities must follow Gyms and Fitness Centers, which is currently 10% at the Red level.
  • Indoor activities, such as team dinners or movie study sessions, are prohibited.
  • Out-of-state games and tournaments are not allowed.
  • Hygiene and sanitation must be encouraged at all times.
  • The physical distance during the game should be implemented as much as possible.

When a county’s case rate is 7 to 14 per 100,000 residents, the state also requires that all coaches and players aged 13 and over in high-contact sports such as football, rugby and water polo be tested weekly. When competing in these sports, the test must be performed with the results available within 24 hours of play. For a list of free trial options, go to humboldtgov.org/COVIDTestRegistration.
