State Updates Guidance on recreational sports for youth and adults

The California Department of Public Health today released updated recreational sports guidelines for youth and adults, which would allow community and school sports to resume COVID-19 safety measures and test protocols in place and whether a county’s case rate is less than 14 per 100,000 residents.

The state guidance outlines the general requirements for all sports and classifies individual sports based on their COVID-19 transmission risk and contact level. This classification determines which additional measures, such as the frequency of tests, are necessary.

Changes in sports orientation for youth and adults will take effect next Friday, February 26. The Humboldt County Joint Information Center will release additional information early next week.

JIC answers more than 30,000 queries

Since the first local case of COVID-19 was reported nearly a year ago, the Humboldt County Joint Information Center (JIC) has responded to more than 30,200 calls and emails. Humboldt County Emergency Services Office Director Ryan Derby said that diverting non-emergency calls from 911 and other dispatch systems helps preserve these systems for life-threatening emergencies.

“Answering live calls and providing information related to incidents has allowed our public security agencies to focus on immediate life safety issues, service calls and public safety coordination during the pandemic,” said Derby. “I am extremely grateful to our residents and our JIC team for using and providing this service to keep our dispatch lines free for their intended purposes.”

The JIC team is available at 707-441-5000 to answer questions related to COVID, from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm
