Press release from the Humboldt County Joint Information Center:
No new cases of COVID-19 have been reported today, so the total number of county residents testing positive for the virus remains at 3,025. Public health officials said that while no case is always good news, today’s report follows a national holiday, when the Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory was closed and most commercial laboratories did not provide data. Health officials urged community residents to continue to follow all COVID-19 security measures when they are close to people who are not part of the family.
Humboldt County remains at the “Purple” or generalized level under California’s “Safer Economy Plan”, with a positivity rate of 4.2% and an adjusted case rate of 9. The county has reached the metric of health equity in the state. If the county continues to meet this metric and local virus data remains stable or improves for another week, the county would qualify for reassignment to the “Red” or substantial level. Preparations are currently underway to vaccinate food and agriculture workers who make up part of the younger workforce, but the moment of opening of this group is based on the supply of available vaccines, as well as the number of vaccines on the market that are approved for emergency use. Higher education is also scheduled to open appointments for vaccination as the supply increases and the first groups are vaccinated in greater numbers.
Younger adults – the 20-29 and 30-39 age groups – represent 1,305, or approximately 43%, of the municipality’s 3,025 cases. Vaccination for people in these age groups who are not part of a qualified workforce can take months due to the age-based prioritization of the state, so health officials emphasized the importance of seeking routine tests for COVID-19.
