COVID-19 Relief Funds: Mayor Lightfoot gave the Chicago police $ 280 million to cover overtime

CHICAGO (WLS) – The Chicago Tribune report found that Chicago spent a significant amount of COVID-19 relief funds with the police.

Some councilors and community groups are scheduled to hold a news conference on Thursday morning to question the allocation of aid funds to Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Chicago received $ 1.2 billion from the federal government for relief from COVID-19, more than $ 280 million went to the Chicago Police Department, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The money was used extensively in police overtime and in responding to last summer’s civil unrest and increasing security during the November elections.

Other money went to other agencies, as well as O’Hare and Midway airports.

The group of councilors said the money should have gone to areas that needed help, such as tenants facing evictions, small businesses and public health services.

They will expose the findings in this morning’s report and detail how they want Lightfoot to prioritize the next wave of funding.

Lightfoot’s office did not return ABC7’s request for comment.
