Long Island reported more than 10,000 new positive cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, with more than 4,500 in Nassau and Suffolk.
In Suffolk County, 5,688 new cases of COVID-19 were reported over the weekend, bringing the total to 113,943 since the pandemic began, according to the state Department of Health. There were 4,838 new infections in Nassau, with the total rising to 102,584 on Monday, January 11.
The number of new cases is the highest in any state county outside of New York City.
New virus-related deaths raised the total to 2,453 in Suffolk and 2,482 in Nassau, compared to 2,410 and 2,452, respectively, on Friday, January 8.
A total of 2.11 million COVID-19 tests were administered in Suffolk, with 2.08 million administered in Nassau.
The number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized on Long Island dropped to 1,517 after a peak of 1,614 on Tuesday, January 5, although it is even lower than when the virus peaked in April, when hospitals reported more than 4,100 patients being treated for the virus.
Approximately 0.06% of the Long Island population is hospitalized, with approximately 75% of hospital beds in the region still available.
Currently, there are 1,579 inhabitants of Long Island hospitalized with the virus, compared to 1,420 a week ago, representing 0.06% of the population and about 77% of the hospital beds available in the region. There are approximately 700 of Long Island’s 812 ICU beds occupied, leaving approximately 19 percent still available.
If Long Island is at risk of reaching 90% of hospital capacity in three weeks, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has promised to shut down the entire region.

Across the state, a total of 1,126,442 positive COVID-19 cases were confirmed in 27.3 million tests that were administered. There have been a total of 31,672 virus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.
