Two new COVID-19 pop-up vaccination sites are being installed on Long Island this week to provide the first doses to thousands of New Yorkers.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that 35 community-based vaccination sites will be online this week in churches, community centers, public housing complexes and cultural centers across the state to “reinforce the state’s commitment to ensuring justice and equity in the vaccine distribution process. ”
On Long Island, vaccination sites have been set up at the Long Island Islamic Center on Brush Hollow Road in Westbury and at St. Rosalie’s Hampton Bays on East Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays.
Both sites opened on Wednesday, February 3. In total, the 35 sites are expected to vaccinate more than 25,000 people this week, with other sites expected to open in the coming weeks.
According to Cuomo, since January 15, nearly 9,000 New Yorkers have received a dose of COVID-19 on community-based pop-up sites. Vaccination sites are planned for all 33 NYCHA senior housing developments and for more than 300 churches and cultural centers that have volunteered to house the sites.
“COVID has brought the terrible truth of inequality and inequality in this country to an inflection point,” said Cuomo. “COVID killed black and Latino New Yorkers at a higher rate, which is why these community sites are one of the vaccines New York priorities.
“More than 9,000 New Yorkers have been vaccinated through this effort, and by making the vaccine accessible and distributed by trusted community partners, we can address skepticism and take this life-saving vaccine to those who need it most,” added the governor. “The light at the end of the tunnel is bright and gets brighter with each new location and with each shot administered.”
