Covid-19 in Onondaga County: 3 more deaths as confirmed main cases 28,000

Syracuse, NY – Three other people died from Covid-19 the day before, as the number of confirmed cases in Onondaga County reached 28,000, according to the county executive.

This means that about 1 in 16 people in the county have tested positive for coronavirus since March.

Two women, 84 and 71, have died since Saturday, according to county executive Ryan McMahon. A third person died in a nursing home; the county has no demographic information about these losses.

In all, 579 people have died here since the virus was first detected in March. As of Saturday, the municipality had just over 3,400 active cases.

At the same time, the decreasing number of new cases offers some hope, according to McMahon.

On the last day, the municipality confirmed another 299 cases. This makes seven consecutive days with daily reports of new cases below 300, according to the data.

“Our best week in terms of new cases since November,” wrote McMahon on social media. “We are around the corner and we need to follow the basics.”

Overall, the county confirmed 28,253 cases.

Hospitalizations remain high, but stable.

As of today, 170 patients were in hospitals in the Syracuse area, according to McMahon. He’s just more of a patient than Saturday’s report.

Thirty-seven patients remain in intensive care.

McMahon encouraged people to follow safety guidelines, including staying home when they are sick and avoiding parties and crowds.

“Don’t be complacent about the meetings, we can still do much better,” he said.
