COVID-19 hospitalizations show a slight increase

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The number of people hospitalized for the new coronavirus has increased slightly, based on state data, as testing has continued to lag behind normal rates due to the New Year holiday.

As of 10:30 am on Sunday, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported that 1,121 people who tested positive for COVID-19 had been added to the state total since the same time on Saturday, which is now 284,265. A total of 244,022 people are considered recovered from the disease, an increase of 804 people.

No additional people who died of COVID-19 were added to the state total. 3,946 people have died from the virus since the pandemic began.

577 people were hospitalized in Iowa due to the disease, a net increase from five people. 120 of these people are in intensive care units, a net increase of one. 52 of these patients require the use of a ventilator, a net reduction of eight. 66 people were recently admitted to Iowa hospitals during the 24-hour reporting period, which was the lowest total number of new admissions since October 19.

Another 2,634 people had test results reported by public and private laboratories in the past 24 hours, reflecting the continued reduction in the number of tests, probably due to the vacation period. The positivity rate for this batch of tests was 42.6%, higher than the 34.5% of the previous day. The positivity rate calculated using this method may differ from the number on the state coronavirus panel, due to the fact that it uses the number of people tested, not the total number of tests, including people who have been tested repeatedly.

A total of 1,364,344 people in Iowa have been tested since the pandemic began.
