Court orders husband to pay wife for years of domestic work: report

A divorce court in Beijing ruled that domestic work “constitutes an intangible property value” and ordered a man to pay his wife $ 7,700 for five years of unpaid work, according to a report.

The BBC said the case has been a source of debate on social media sites across the country. The report said that one of the arguments was that the woman – identified only by the surname Wang – was not fairly compensated. The comments pointed out how housekeepers in the city could demand $ 50,000 a year for some of the tasks she performed. (The husband also has to pay $ 309 a month for child support.)

The couple has been married for five years. They have a son. The Guardian said there is a new civil code in the country that allows a partner to seek compensation for domestic work and, for example, to care for an elderly father.

“Everyone who has done housework knows that doing housework is not easier than going to work, it is often more difficult,” said a Weibo user, according to the Guardian.
