Country music star Kris Kristofferson retires

Country singer and songwriter Kris Kristofferson has officially retired.

The 84-year-old musician quietly retired from a decades-long career in music in 2020.

Kristofferson’s official departure from the song was subtly mentioned in the release shared with Fox News on Thursday, which says: “The legendary songwriter and actor officially retired in 2020, leaving his son John Kristofferson to lead the family business.”

Morris Higham Management was slated to take over the representation of his property, while the artist’s son, John Kristofferson, now oversees the family’s business, the statement said.

“It has been amazing to delve into my father’s catalog and history with this experienced group of professionals,” said John Kristofferson in a statement. “The name has always been synonymous with composition as art, and we are looking forward to reintroducing your work to new and old fans. We have many exciting projects going on and I look forward to spreading them to the world.”

MHM President Clint Higham reacted to the news on Wednesday as well, calling the composer “Me and Bobby McGee” “the artist that every artist strives to be”.

In addition to writing and interpreting hits, Kristofferson achieved sex symbol status in the 1970s and, in 1971, began a parallel career as an actor. In 1977, he won a Golden Globe for his role in “A Star is Born”.

He also starred in the films “Semi-Tough”, “Songwriter”, “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid”, “Lone Star”, “Blade” and “The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea”.

In 1985, the country star joined Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings to form the group The Highway Men. He is also a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and won the Johnny Mercer award from the Songwriter Hall of Fame.

In 2007, Kristofferson was honored with Country Music Television’s Johnny Cash Visionary Award. He also received the Grammy Award for his work as a whole.

Kristofferson’s official website notes that he traveled “incessantly” over the years, until the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020.

Kristofferson reflected on his rewarding career in both music and film for Fox News in 2013. Then, at 77, the country artist said his career seemed “very surreal”.

He also discussed with us his fight against memory loss.

“I wish my memory was not so bad. They tell me it is because of all the football, boxing and concussions that I suffered. A few years ago, my memory started to fail,” he lamented. “But I can remember my songs, so I can perform, but other than that …”
